LYNN KARNS
Art through Photography
Lynn moved to the Skagit Valley in 2007 with her husband, Dave, after retiring from Grand Canyon University where she taught photography and journalism. Lynn loves to photograph nature and wildlife and found a perfect place in the Pacific Northwest to follow her lifelong passion.
Lynn found her passion in photography when she taught in high school on an Air Force base in Misawa, Japan from 1969 to 1971. (An interesting side note: she also found her husband there.) Everything in Japan was so completely different from where she came from that she felt driven to record what she saw. Then, in the base photo lab, Lynn learned to develop her negatives and turn them into enlargements and she was hooked for life.
When Lynn returned to the U.S., she moved to Arizona with Dave and she took as many classes as she could at Arizona State University in photography and began teaching it alongside her English and Journalism classes in high school. Eventually Lynn received her masters at ASU. In the summers, Lynn and Dave would travel all around the United States and Lynn would take photographs and continue learning and growing more experienced. She started teaching full time at Grand Canyon University in 1995 and retired in 2005. “I loved teaching beginning photography so I could watch the student’s excitement as they watched their photographs develop”, said Lynn.
After Lynn moved to La Conner and eventually Anacortes, she began displaying and selling her work. “I know that I received my passion for taking pictures from God and just began to feel called to share the beauty in nature that I was privileged to witness and capture”, said Lynn.
